An occupation is any task or activity that brings meaning and purpose to your life.  Examples of occupations are: bathing, dressing, grooming, work, leisure and play.  Occupational Therapy helps individuals gain or improve the skills required to complete what they want and need to do in their day to day life, as independently as possible.

Examples:

A child's occupation is playing and being a student. OT can assist children to gain the skills they need to be successful learners and to grow and develop through play

After a brain injury an individual may have difficulty with memory, organizing, planning, or initiating tasks.  OT can help the individual by providing cognitive aides and methods to keep them safe and help them get back to what they were doing prior to the injury with adaptations if needed.

A person has fallen on the ice and broken their wrist.  They are now having trouble with opening containers, grooming their hair, preparing meals.  OT can help by providing exercises to improve range of motion and strength, reduce pain, and offer suggestions for adaptive equipment if needed to help them regain function.
